The truth about horse racing deaths

Lots of bones in horse's legs. They start racing horses at a young age (3) when bones might not be strong enough. When one leg is injured, the horse will shift its weight onto the other legs, which causes injury to those legs. Seems like injuries and euthanization is very common and there is a vehicle that follows the horses on the racetrack to assess injuries and euthanize them quickly after...[more]

Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln

An epic biography of Lincoln. I enjoyed learning about his pre-presidency days, and the backgrounds of the other major characters in his team of rivals (Seward, Salmon, Bates, Stanton). Of course the war was very challenging. Lincoln came into the situation with less political experience than the others and no military experience. But he quickly became a true and respected commander politically and militarily. Also interesting was the twists and turns leading up to the Emancipation proclamation and the 13th amendment and Lincoln's evolving views of the blacks.

How we will rid the oceans of plastic

Large pieces of plastics break down into micro plastics (less than 1 inch) which are eaten by animals. 80-90% of the plastics in the ocean are still in large pieces, so we still have time to collect them before they break down. This is a simple, elegant system of floating nets collecting/trapping garbage for pickup by large ship.

How to green the world's deserts and reverse climate change

desertification of semi-arid land is caused by lack of animals trampling and pooping on the land. Modern land management keeps livestock out of protected lands, which causes the existing grass to either get burned or die by drying out, both processes do not cover the soil and allow it to retain water. His solution is to replicate what happened before man came on to the scene, by allowing large livestock herds to wander on the land. Very provocative and counter-intuitive idea, but seems to make sense.

How to Worry Less about Money

A short book (110 pages) full of deep insights about how we should think about money. One main theme: the person and the money are in a relationship or a team. Both sides must contribute to the success of relationship. If a person does not have virtues or maturity, it does not matter how much money he has. On the other hand, even if a person is quite virtuous, if he has no money, he still cannot get anything done. Many other interesting concepts and ideas in this book. Too many to summarize here.

Getting Free Of Self-Importance Is The Key To Happiness

We are too focused on ourselves and think we control and are responsible for everything. This leads to negative emotions such as guilt, shame, and envy. Change our perspective to see we are just a part of a larger, mysterious world. Become engaged in the present moment, experience flow so that we can "lose ourselves" even for a short time. Eros: powerful sexual feeling at the beginning of relationship.

Agape: charitable love, compassion/generosity despite flaws in the other person. A god feels this towards his subjects.

Benjamin Franklin: An American Life

Wow, I always vaguely knew that Benjamin Franklin was an important figure in American history, but did not realize how much he contributed, especially with his diplomacy with the French during the war for independence. His work with electricity was also very foundational to later work. He as the one who discovered the concept of capacitance, batteries, positive and negative charge, and the lightening rod. He came from very humble beginnings and through hard work and frugality built up a good wealth, but he was not interested in excessive wealth and believed in helping others. His beliefs were very advanced for his time and also became a foundation for American culture.

This online course was developed by Google. It is a very good introduction to machine learning with practical programming examples/exercises in Python. Is Gluten that bad for your health?
